  4. This is the distribution for DVIWIN 2.8 which is a DVI driver for previewing
  5. and printing DVI files under MS-Windows 3.1. The following steps will help
  6. you install the program as quickly as possible. Users of previous versions of
  7. should only follow the upgrading steps; first time users should skip this
  8. part and follow the initial installation procedure.

  11. Upgrading from previous versions of dviwin
  12. ------------------------------------------
  13.  
  14.   1. Run the program "convini.exe" from the Program Manager once ONLY.
  15.      The new version uses private initialization files; convini extracts
  16.      the configuration information from win.ini and creates the files
  17.      "dviwin.ini" and "wbr.ini", so you don't need to do it manually.
  18.      After you run it, just discard that program.
  19.  
  20.   2. Copy the files "dviwin.exe", "dviwin.hlp", "wbr.exe", "wbr.hlp",
  21.      "clipmeta.exe", "graphio.dll", "miscwin.dll" and "ctl3d.dll" over
  22.      the old files (remember that "ctl3d.dll" should go to the
  23.      \windows\system directory).

  25.   3. Read or print the documentation files "whats.new", "dviwin.wri"
  26.      and "helpme.wri". There are quite a few changes in this version,
  27.      so please read these files.
  28.  
  29.   4. The files "mspin.flt", "bmpin.flt" and "pcxin.flt" are graphics
  30.      filters. Please read the "Specials" section in "dviwin.hlp" or
  31.      "dviwin.wri" for instructions about the filter installation.
  32.  
  33.   5. If you want to inspect or modify the source code of the filters,
  34.      unzip the file "graphio.zip" using the "-d" switch in pkunzip
  35.      and read the "readme" files for each directory.
  36.  
  37.   6. If you want to generate missing fonts automatically, please read
  38.      the appropriate section in "dviwin.hlp" or "dviwin.wri" first.

  41.   The following steps apply only if you are upgrading from dviwin 2.0:
  42.  
  43.   7. Go to the Options submenu and add the suffix \$r to your font
  44.      directory. Otherwise, the program will NOT be able to find any
  45.      PK fonts.
  46.  
  47.   8. Make sure that you have a statement "FILES=50" (or more) in your
  48.      config.sys file.
  49.  
  50.   9. If you use a font substitution file, change it according to the
  51.      new method (uses dpi instead of TeX magnifications). The new
  52.      file should be called "dviwin.sub" instead of "texfonts.sub";
  53.      there is a sample substitution file in this release.

  56. Initial installation
  57. --------------------
  58.  
  59.   1. Copy "ctl3d.dll" to your windows system directory (eg., c:\windows\system)
  60.      If you use windows 3.0, copy also the file "commdlg.dll" to the
  61.      same directory.
  62.  
  63.   2. Copy "dviwin.exe", "dviwin.hlp", "clipmeta.exe", "wbr.exe", "wbr.hlp",
  64.      "graphio.dll" and "miscwin.dll" in any directory specified in your PATH
  65.      environment variable.

  67.   3. Make sure that you have a statement "FILES=50" (or more) in your
  68.      config.sys file.

  70.   4. Make new entries in one of your Program Manager groups for the three
  71.      programs (dviwin.exe, wbr.exe, clipmeta.exe).
  72.  
  73.   5. Read or print the documentation files "dviwin.wri", "wbr.wri",
  74.      "clipmeta.wri" and "helpme.wri" using the Microsoft Write program.
  75.  
  76.   6. You will also need a collection of PK font files in various
  77.      resolutions; many such files can be found in the SIMTEL archives
  78.      or any of its mirrors. In general, you want to get at least printer
  79.      fonts, and optionally screen fonts. as well as for your printer
  80.      Most screen fonts are in the files "dvivga2.zip" through "dvivga8.zip"
  81.      in the directory pd1:<msdos.tex> of simtel. When you get these files,
  82.      arrange them as following:
  83.  
  84.      a. Make a "base" directory (eg., c:\tex\pkfonts)
  85.      b. Make a subdirectory under the base directory for each resolution.
  86.         The name of each subdirectory should simply be the resolution.
  87.         For example, you can make the subdirectories "c:\tex\pkfonts\300",
  88.         "c:\tex\pkfonts\329", "c:\tex\pkfonts\360" for the 300 dpi, 329
  89.         dpi and 360 dpi resolutions respectively.
  90.      c. Put your PK font files in the correct subdirectories according
  91.         to their resolution.

  93.   7. The first time that you run "dviwin.exe", go to the "Font Directory"
  94.      entry in the "Options" submenu and specify the base directory for
  95.      your fonts followed by \$r. In the above example, the font directory
  96.      entry should be "c:\tex\pkfonts\$r". If this step is not done, you will
  97.      see NOTHING.

  99.   8. Using a resolution between 100 and 145 dpi, open and see the file
  100.      "demo.dvi". This was produced from the file "demo.tex" and it reads
  101.      the graphics file "demo.wmf". As you will see, it is very easy to
  102.      combine text and graphics using this driver. You can also print the
  103.      file by issuing the "Print" command from the "File" submenu.
